Sound healing is a form of vibrational medicine that uses various instruments to help the body heal. It can be done in person or virtually, and is a great way to release stress, improve mental clarity, and boost energy levels. Despite its New Age-y and woo-woo appearance, there is real science behind the physical benefits of sound healing.

Everything is made up of energy, and our emotions are a reflection of our internal energy. Those emotions create and hold our patterns in our bodies, both physically and energetically. When we can change these patterns, it’s possible to experience true health and well-being. The ancient sages and masters knew the power of sound to affect our moods, and now science is catching up. This is why so many people are adding sound healing to their wellness routine.

During a session you will lie down on a yoga mat or meditation carpet, and listen as the practitioner plays various instruments in the background. The sounds range from deep, powerful, earthy gongs and Tibetan bowls to softer, more ethereal-sounding crystal singing bowls and chimes. The vibrations will move through your entire body, soothing and balancing your energies. Depending on your symptoms the sessions can be relaxing, energising or even transformative. Some people feel very relaxed and peaceful, whereas others have visualisations or downloads during a sound healing session.

The science behind it is called cymatics, which is the study of patterns and vibrations. For example, if you take a large metal gong and place it over water it will create beautiful ripples, waves and patterns as the sound vibrates through the surface of the water. The same happens to our cells and our emotions when we experience the vibrations of sound. Our emotions are the most powerful part of our being, and when we can shift these emotions, we can change the vibrations in the rest of our being.

During your session, your practitioner may play specific frequencies that resonate with the chakras (the centres of our being). The most common ones are 528 Hz which stimulates the brain to heal and promotes joy and miracles, and 741 Hz that can ease pain and lower blood pressure.

In addition to these sonic frequencies, there are also binaural beats that can be used to increase focus and performance at work. This can be a great tool to help you stay focused and productive throughout the day, especially in high-stress environments.

While you may not be able to make it to a live session, there are some great online resources for getting started with sound healing. Many of these sites offer free downloads, so you can experiment with them at home. There are also a number of apps that can provide you with a wide variety of healing and relaxation frequencies for your listening pleasure.

So, what are you waiting for? Start incorporating sound healing into your life and see the difference it can make in your physical, emotional, spiritual and mental wellbeing.
